Book Review – Lake Effect

Lake Effect: Two Sisters and a Town's Toxic Legacy by Nancy Nichols

This book was recommended by one of my blog readers. It was a great read overall. Although it wasn't totally about detox, it brings up the point that we live in a toxic environment and we should be more vigilant.

The idea of book came from Nichols's personal experience. Her journey to research and reveal the cause of her sister's ovarian cancer, which lead her sister to death. While working on the book, Nichols received her own diagnosis of a rare form of cancer, which requires aggressive treatment.

Nichols uncovers the evidence of many different forms of pollution that may have contributed to the cancers. She reveals the evidences that the pollution of the Great Lakes region may have been the main cause. She recalls growing up in the region eating fish caught from the Great Lakes. She concluded that eating those contaminated fish was the biggest mistake.

Whether or not it was the fish that caused the cancers, we know that eating too much fish, especially ones with high levels of mercury, is dangerous to your body. We also know that we constantaly need to detox in order to keep these toxins out of our body. We change our lifestyle and eat health to boost the detoxification process that our body naturally do.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the book. It is definitely staying on my book shelf. I'd like to leave with a quote made by one of the readers. I think this quote sums it up well.

She is journalistically rigorous, while being human, real and, at times, quite funny. A truly exceptional book - something for the heart and mind.
